THE INTERRUPTING TIME TRAVEL TREE

Being an anxious kid isn’t easy, but here’s a funtastical time travel adventure that might help.
A peculiar girl and an anxious boy travel to 1969. While helping a mythical pet deliver a mysterious briefcase, they accidentally blast off in history’s most iconic spacecraft, challenging the boy’s fears and worldview.

Warning: mischievous storyteller!

Beta reader reviews:

"What a gem of a story! A fantastic debut that captivates and makes you want to jump down Alice’s rabbit hole to tell her that she’s missing out on the fun. We have a better rabbit hole right here.

As a teacher and author who has read hundreds, if not thousands, of stories in my twenty-five years of education, I can tell you when a story comes along that is imaginative, well-written, original, and keeps you wanting to find out what happens next, you’ve found a winner. The Interrupting Time Travel Tree is just that.

Join Odd on this wonderful adventure. You won’t be sorry!"

"So I just finished The Time Travel Tree! As an adult who reads a LOT of children's fiction (I'm a teacher) I really enjoyed it. It's a really interesting, funny, and manic story, so it's perfect for the target audience.

I gave the book to two boys. They are ten and find reading difficult, and call it "boring". So I gave it to them to read together. They took turns reading it one page at a time to one another. They absolutely loved it. They ranted and raved about it to the rest of the class, and I ended up with a waiting list on my wall of kids who wanted to read it. Overall, everyone thinks it's really funny, and they loved the "silliness" of it.

In general I enjoyed the plot. I thought the idea of Odd getting to get rid of his main worries through adventure was clever.

This also has the potential to become a series, with each book set in a different time.

The characters were interesting, individual, funny, and there weren’t too many. Odd is a nice and relateable character, especially to any children with anxiety or other issues. Blinki Dins is hilarious.

Obviously the humour is an important part of the book. It is funny, and children of the target age find it hilarious.

It really reminded me of "The Giggler Treatment" by Roddy Doyle and slightly of "The Magic Misfits" by Neil Patrick Harris."

"I think the book has a big adventure, I think the 42 eyed character is really funny. I sometimes feel anxious like Odd. Odd said being brave is not about not being afraid, it’s about facing your fears. But when you feel super super anxious and don’t get rid of it, think of something wacky and eyepopping and looney. And take a deep breath. When you feel anxious and super scared, like you just close your eyes and relax and take a deep breath. And let your worries blow away. If you feel worried, just (spoiler...describes what Odd does in the book). One time, I was feeling super anxious, and I was thinking about looney stuff like Odd. Then, at the end, I felt better.

I think it may inspire a film and maybe a video game. I think kids should read the book because it helps you relax, it gives you tips of how to relax and how to face your fear and stop your anxious feeling. And because Blinki-Dins and Cat. You should read it because it’s full of time travel adventure and they time travel all the way back to 1960s, fortunate unexpected turn of events. It’s full of adventure and wacky parts he’s afraid of. I think that’s funny. The book is funny if you like looney stuff or are a bit like me, and you’re 7 or 8 or 9, then this book is for you."

"Having seen how this helped my child manage some of his own anxiety, and gain a healthy perspective on it, I think this book could really help a lot of children (and grown-ups too for that matter).

A grand, utterly ridiculous adventure, a blend of real and surreal, weaved together by a thread of good-natured, hilarious mischief. Wondrous though the story is, it manages to stay grounded (ironically, since much of it is spent off the ground!), which I think is key to helping the reader relate to Odd and his fantastic journey.

The relatability is especially important here, since the book cleverly addresses and helps childhood anxiety through Odd's own worries and fears. He gets a few simple, practical tips to self-manage his moments of anxiety, which helps him progress and enjoy his adventure. The smart, and I think essential element, is rather than a miraculous transformation into the traditional fearless hero, the characters acknowledge the fact that anxieties and fear will still be there, but we can learn to manage them, and live our lives."

"You know, I'm kind of a snob when it comes to writing, and so I'm not always that easy to impress.  I went into reading this with the idea of what could I do to help her with this if it needs help?  But, seriously, I was not just being nice; I was truly impressed!  I thought it sounded like a professional book one might pick up at a store someplace for their kids.  I would not change a thing about this.  The little interruptions are different, but they are very cute and keep the kids on their toes. I enjoyed reading it!  And thank you for sharing it with me!"

Benjamin Hill

"Loved your story. It was fun, funny, just educational enough to not be too educational (if that makes sense), and it had a nice overall moral/lesson. The playful voice of the narrator was interesting, and fooled me with the pranks too.

What a wonderful, fun story!"

Adam Folgers

"So I finished the book and I really did like it. The whole time I was reading it I was imagining myself reading it to my son if he was younger and how much I would have fun doing so. My son deals with issues and to have a book like this helps him immensely. I also very much like the lessons and advice sprinkled thru out the book and at the end. Wonderful to discuss those things. The Interrupting Time Traveling Tree, is a remarkable and very fun book to read. Very creative and a bit zany! I like the play on words but most of all I like the message. I recommend her book for anyone!!"

Mike S.

"Wow, this is impressive! I truly enjoyed reading this! You drew me into the story right away; it was engaging right from the start and you hold the reader's attention throughout. You use some clever techniques for getting the kids involved in the story line, but also getting them to think about history and culture, and getting them to investigate. The pranks keep them on their toes, but it's also a good way to prepare them for the inconsistencies that life throws at people. As an anxious kid myself, you take the time to build Odd's confidence and ameliorate his fears quite well. Seriously, I am surprised at how much I enjoyed this! I laughed out loud several times. I think this is a perfect story for kids! Thank you for sharing your work with me!"

Ben

"Well, the book is really fun. And it’s really fun for me to read. And that’s what I like about this book. It has fun characters. Odd and Blinki-Dins are really nice, actually. And there’s a house. They went on adventures, that was funny. Odd learned to not be scared. The book is nice. You should make a whole set of your book. Everything you make for everyone is nice. Kids should read it because the books are fun."

Ariel F.

"Love your book. It’s amazing and so imaginative. Really unique."

Martin Taylor

"I’ve read, and thoroughly enjoyed, your Time Travel Tree book.

I especially love the playful language and the unreliable narrator.

The very first paragraph is chock-full of word play from the narrator, which I love. There are bits of playful language throughout, which I also love."

Daniel McCoy

"I just have to say...this is good. Like, really good. I love the characters and their quirks. The world building is well done as well."

Jason Hyde

"I like it. I enjoyed reading it. Your own personality comes through quite a bit. In uni we look a lot at reading the author inside the text so who you are really comes through, and I'm sure publishers will see that and enjoy that."

Rhys D.

"Eirin Hallangen is a creative force and her writing shows that she has a fertile imagination and a keen eye for fantastical stories with a kooky edge! Loved reading the story- it's delightfully bonkers and provocative and inspirational."

Pete Atherton

"You write really well, I’m impressed, that was genuinely funny in parts.

I like your surrealist style and the word play that you use, it reminds me a bit of those Malapropisms that John Lennon used to incorporate in his writing. I think he was quite influenced by surrealism and the Goon show.

I also like the metafiction whereby you break the 4th wall and talk directly to the reader as the storyteller, they're funny bits.

I got the feeling that there were lots of little snippets of info tucked away in the text.

The things that make Odd anxious were amusing, I can relate. I’m quite looking forward to the next instalment now."

Carl Colley

"Trees can’t talk, but they can take you on a funtastic journey."

Giulio M.

"A zany time-travel adventure jam-packed with fun characters, tricks, jokes and crazy facts (do you know what 'floccinaucinihilipilification' means? Read The Time Travel Tree to find out!) Your book really reminds me of the Roddy Doyle books I read as a kid. They were hilarious and a little cracked. You are creating and spreading joy to children!"

David I.

"Overall, it’s definitely a unique way of teaching kids that change isn’t that bad and worrying doesn’t solve any problems. Some of the characters definitely had some unique traits that made them easy to identify. There are plenty of great jokes and definitely a solid concept here. Thanks for giving me a chance to review it!"

Benjamin W.

"I really enjoyed it! Your writing made me laugh out loud a couple of times and the pov is lovely. I think children love to read more stories of the adventures of the time travel tree! I play Dungeons and Dragons with children and I think they would enjoy it too. Thanks for sharing!"

Margoo Shrijft

"I like it! I have laughed many times, I'm quite impressed. You are top!"

Julio Perez

"Perfect!! It’s a great play on words too! Odd, odd name etc very clever!

This story is an ingeniously crafted tale which would capture and engage the imagination of any child. The characters and story are refreshingly unique and take us on a wonderous journey through time and beyond the realms of normal imagination. This story is perfectly in tune with the imagination of children and will educate them in small, fun, manageable pieces from start to finish. Fantasticall!"
